Superintendent’s Report

April 2025

Curriculum and Instruction:

Our students and teachers continue to prepare for the upcoming CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) testing, which is scheduled to begin at the end of April/first part of May.  Students in grades 3rd through 8th will take the ELA and math summative assessments, and students in grades 5th & 8th will take the science assessment.

Our summer ELOP (Expanded Learning Opportunities Program) is scheduled for July 7th - August 1st. The program will once again be held on Ambrosini’s campus due to the summer construction that is planned at Walker.  Registration information will be sent out soon, so stay tuned.

Budget:

We are beginning to work on the LCAP (Local Control and Accountability Plan) update and budget development for the 2025-26 school year.  Once the May Revision is released by Governor Newsom, we will have more information on California’s budget for the coming year.  Our Budget Manager, Jennifer Goodner, and I will attend a School Services of California May Revise Workshop on May 21st.

Enrollment for 2025-26:

Enrollment for the 2025-26 school year is now open for new TK-8th grade students.  Families can register online by visiting our website at fortunaesd.com, where they will find the enrollment link and additional information.  Transitional Kindergarten (TK) eligibility applies to children who turn four years old before September 2, 2025.  We encourage families to watch the informational video on our website to explore our TK and kindergarten programs at Ambrosini and Walker Schools.  We look forward to welcoming new students and families to our District!

Successes:

Thank you to our music teachers and students for entertaining us with outstanding band and choir performances at the Spring Concert on March 19th at FMS!  Students from Toddy Thomas and Fortuna Middle School performed at the concert.

The Crescent City Jaycees Basketball Tournament was held last month, and our FMS students walked away winners.  Congratulations to our 8th-grade boys’ basketball team for winning 1st place in their division, our 8th-grade cheerleaders for winning 2nd place in their division, and Sofia Baker for being crowned the Jaycees Tournament Queen!  Way to represent our District!

Congratulations to Sofia Baker from Fortuna Middle School for winning 1st place and qualifying for state at the Doris Niles Humboldt County Science Fair!

Most of our students eligible for glasses through the Glasses2Classes program received their new eyewear at the end of March.

Our District’s work on a five-year strategic plan continues.  We hope to have a draft plan to present to all staff, the community, and the FESD Governing Board in May.

Thank you to our dedicated staff, who continue to work hard for our students!

Important Dates:

April 14th-18th: Spring Break (No School)

April 21st-May 2nd: ELOP Enrollment Window for Summer 2025

I hope everyone has a wonderful break and returns rested and ready to finish the year!

Respectfully Submitted,

Amy Betts
